Priests and Lay People

Priests are members of the clergy who preach daily Church services and the lay people are everyday followers.
  • The priests tell people about God and the Church's beliefs, and try to help people make it into heaven.
  • They read text from the Bible, and offer daily mass, or communion.
  • During mass, bread and wine are consecrated as the body and blood of Jesus, the Holy Son of God, and the people come forward to receive it.
The lay people make up the congregation, and come to the daily Church services. They hold little or no power in the church, and come to the church to:
  • Pray
  • Learn
  • Try to get to heaven.

The services in the Middle Ages are different than today because many people could not read or understand Latin, and the services and books were in Latin. The Church would say things, and people would not know what they meant. Today, services and books are made so the people can understand what they are saying.
